Projeto Muriu,RN

Concurso na praia de Muriu,Natal

An extraordinary place, where an extraordinary strip of sand dunes and lagoons, a haven of incomparable environmental beauty, plunges into the ocean at the eastern tip of Brazil, 50 kilometres north of Natal: this is Praia de Muriú, the area involved in the competition organised by the Vignola company.
An invitational competition to design a preliminary master plan with guidelines for environmental insertion, designed for the construction of a tourist complex of the highest standard along the coasts of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.
The competition’s main aim is to devise a tourist, hotel and realestate complex based on the innovative concept of leisure and coexistence with nature and the most modern design concept in the fields of tourism, leisure and recreation at the seaside.
This is a brave project, almost a turning point on the tourist scene, an industry which usually works along the most conventional lines, somewhere between the indistinct and globalised.
We have all experienced that gentle sense of unfamiliarity in those holiday villages scattered all over the planet: after arriving and enjoying a welcome cocktail on offer at the outdoor bar, it is hard to tell whether you are in Djerba or Santa Domingo. This is no standard project, dictated solely by business and image, it is a targeted consultation programme by leading architects seeking to create a fresh scenario for well-being and leisure.
To help shape the coastline here, carefully gauged and competent design teams were pre-selected from various American cultural backgrounds, in order to come up with solutions providing new settings and the request for new forms of more demanding and sophisticated tourism, not just aimed at international travellers but also the Brazilian home market which is booming at the moment.
The four teams selected carefully interpreted the distinctive features of the location in terms of the environmental and local identity, interpreting it based on their own personal design approaches, quite different from each other.
De Yturbe/EDSA’s project came up with a very original rendition of themes and styles which have made modern Mexican architectural design so important, the reference to Barragan goes without saying. De Yturbe’s expertise is instantly recognisable in the design of the accommodation facilities, layout of forms, planes and surfaces, the clever use of colour and careful mix of local materials, not to mention the almost poetic artistry with which the spaces and premises have been set out.
Ruy Othake has handled the issue of the landscape and architecture along exquisitely modern Brazilian architectural lines, in which we can recognise very original renderings of Niemeyer’s forms and Burle Marx’s organic paths. A large tree-lined axis provides an inorganic backbone, almost like the lymphatic structure of a leaf, for the various parts of the project, which, in turn, are set out fluidly and smoothly.
Oficina de Arquitetos has designed a complex project emanating a desire to create an authentic stratified and articulated functional mix of great complexity, drawing on the use of diagrams of the flows and aggregations, showing a very modern-day approach which, in some sense, is close to the very latest trends in western architecture, particularly those in northern Europe.
Bearing in mind the team’s greater geographical and cultural distance, Overland and partners architectural forms and idioms rely more heavily on popular trends and tendencies, mixing certain vernacular elements with features drawn from communal life. The team has shown great skill in assessing just how much importance to assign to the landscaping of the accommodation facilities and golf course, which weave together to create carefully gauged interaction between the sea and sand dunes.
Part of the beach has been set aside for a golf course majestically designed by Jack Nicklaus. Another point in Overland’s favour was the way the team has worked on the detailed master plan to set out exactly how these new forms of tourism and well-being referred to in the tender were to be put to use.
In the end, the jury opted for this latter design, due to its ability to meet all the requirements in full, in terms of the environment, landscape, quality of life and safety, also emphasising that it would be highly advisable to draw on some of the wonderful architectural features in the other entrants’ projects.

Ruy Ohtake Arquitetura e Urbanismo
